System Dynamics modeling is a student-centered analytical approach that allows students access to the study of complex, non-linear, dynamic, feedback systems. Because the modeling software is icon-based it provides a schematic representation that the students create, laying out the structure of the system as they understand it. The power of the approach is in the actual model-building process, where students must determine what variables are important, how the variables depend upon one another, and where the feedback loops emerge. Students who continue on to create a simulatable model gain further insight by testing their mental models, refining their model design, and recommending policies that can be implemented within their models and tested. This process aligns with many of the educational goals we value for students in secondary school.
